Connecting Culture to Country: An Evening of Dialogue and Deep Listening in Toowoomba

The Darling Downs Environment Council (DDEC) is proud to host a special evening of discussion and reflection on how our society’s culture and spirituality can be more deeply connected to Country.

The event will take place on Tuesday 16th of September from 6:00pm at Toowoomba City Library, featuring an extraordinary panel of First Nations leaders:

  • Conrad Bauwens – Local Wakka Wakka Traditional Owner and Custodian of Gummingurru.
  • Paul Carmody – Senior Lecturer in First Nation Studies at the University of Southern Queensland.
  • Jandamarra Cadd – Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung descendent, celebrated visual artist and storyteller.

The evening begins with snacks provided by Toowoomba First Nation Allies. Each speaker will share their wisdom and reflections on the question:

“How can we connect our society’s culture and spirituality to Country together going forward?”

The discussion will be facilitated by Ahri Tallon, Coordinator of DDEC, before opening up for audience questions and contributions.

“This is a chance for the Toowoomba community to sit in deep listening, guided by First Nations voices,” said Mr Tallon.
“Connecting culture to Country isn’t just about reconciliation—it’s about healing, learning, and building a future where respect for Country is at the heart of how we live together.”

The conversation will invite reflection on themes such as:

  • Stories of Country that reveal the depth of people–land relationships.
  • What genuine allyship looks like in practice.
  • How schools, councils, and community groups can work alongside First Nations people.
  • How connecting to Country can support healing for both First Nations people, the wider community and the land.

The event will close with an open audience dialogue, allowing community members to share thoughts and questions in a respectful, shared space.
