Geocache Adventure Project

We’re developing a DDEC Geo-Caching Trail initiative to engage local families, schools, and the wider community with our tree protection and biodiversity goals. The idea is to create a series of both physical and virtual geo-caches placed at significant parks and bushland areas across Toowoomba Central and Highfields initially. Participants will follow a trail using the geocaching app, finding hidden cache containers or completing location-based challenges that share information about important local trees, wildlife habitats, and conservation efforts. It has a real education focus.

This project aims to make our advocacy visible and interactive while encouraging outdoor activity and learning. We’re currently seeking input from members on potential park sites, suitable cache locations, and ideas for educational content to include in each cache. Once finalised, the trails will be launched as a community resource, supported by DDEC volunteers. Three trails have been imagined, two very park-like (e.g. Toowoomba – Queens Park, Laurel Bank Park Picnic Point, Lake Annand. Highfields – Peacehaven Botanic Park, Williams Park, Sport & Recreation Park) and one more bushland style (e.g. National Parks and Wildlife Centre, Barry Griffiths Bushland), McKnight Park). 

If you are interested in helping out, there are things that need to be done particularly – Identifying suitable parks and sites where caches could be placed, especially those with significant trees or local ecological value; Walking potential trails to GPS-mark cache locations and suggest safe, family-friendly placement points; Volunteer support for maintenance—once the caches are in place, we’ll need regular checks to keep everything in good order.  If you are interested please email: berkhout.michele@gmail.com
